يقع المتحف الوطني في الجانب الشرقي من مركز الملك عبد العزيز التاريخي, بحي المربع بمدينة الرياض بجوار قصر الملك عبدالعزيز (المربع)
بني على أرض تبلغ مساحتها حوالي 17000 متر مربع، أما المساحة الإجمالية لمبانيه حوالي 28000 متر مربّع
افتتحه خادم الحرمين الشريفين الملك فهد يرحمه الله عام 1419 هـ ضمن الإفتتاح الكبير لمركز الملك عبدالعزيز التاريخي بمناسبة مرور مائة عام على دخول الملك عبدالعزيز رحمه الله الرياض في عام 1319هـ.
